Donald A. Balasa

Council Member, CBMW - Donald A. Balasa (JD, MBA) has served as the Executive Director and Legal Counsel of the American Association of Medical Assistants since 1990. He received both his baccalaureate and law degrees from Northwestern University, and his Master of Business Administration in economics from the University of Chicago. He earned his Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives in 1985. He has served on the National Commission for Certifying Agencies since 2007, and as chair since 2010. Balasa has become the foremost expert on medical assisting public policy issues in the country, fielding numerous requests for guidance on a daily basis. He also continues to protect medical assistants’ right to practice by writing legislation, regulations, and testimony. Most recently, he spoke on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its effect on licensure examinations at the Annual Attorney Certification Seminar, given by the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards. Executive Director Balasa also continues his service to the broader legal and credentialing community. In recognition of Executive Director Balasa’s exemplary dedication, leadership, and service, the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) has given him a presidential commendation.
