Announcing the Winner of the 2017 Wayne Grudem Award for Complementarian Scholarship

CBMW is pleased to announce that Dr. Al Wolters is this year’s winner of the Wayne Grudem Award for Complementarian Scholarship. He receives the award for his research on important Greek vocabulary in 1 Timothy.

Wolters’s research focused on the word authenteo (“to excercise authority”) in 1 Timothy 2:12, where Paul writes, “I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man.” Wolters marshals significant textual evidence and demonstrates conclusively that authentein is neither pejorative (“domineer”) nor ingressive (“assume authority”), thereby undermining egalitarian readings of the text. His research is included in a new chapter titled, “The Meaning of AUTHENTEO,” that appears in the third edition of “Women in the Church: An Interpretation & Application of 1 Timothy 2:9-15“ edited by Andreas Köstenberger and Tom Schreiner (Crossway, 2016).

Wolters is professor emeritus of religion and theology and classical languages at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario.

Past recipients of the Wayne Grudem Award for Complementarian Scholarship include Drs. Andreas and Margaret Köstenberger (2014), Bruce Ware, (2015), and Michael Burer (2016).

The award is named after CBMW co-founder Wayne Grudem, known to many evangelicals as the author of his thorough and accessible Systematic Theology published with Zondervan in 2004. Grudem became Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies at Phoenix Seminary in 2001 after teaching at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for 20 years. He has served as the President of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, as President of the Evangelical Theological Society (1999), and as a member of the Translation Oversight Committee for the English Standard Version of the Bible. He also served as the General Editor for the ESV Study Bible (Crossway Bibles, 2008).

Grudem has written a number of works on complementarianism from a scholarly perspective, including: Evangelical Feminism: A New Path to Liberalism? (Crossway, 2006), Pastoral Leadership for Manhood and Womanhood (with Dennis Rainey; Crossway, 2003), Biblical Foundations for Manhood and Womanhood (Crossway, 2002), and Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism (with John Piper; Crossway Books, 1991).
