The Leading Edge: Chuck Norris Says, “Respect the Fallen”

The Story:  “Spare the War Memorials,” by Chuck Norris writing at NewsBusters.org.

The Lead: “My middle brother’s name, Wieland Norris, is etched on the wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington because he sacrificed his life in battle June 3, 1970, so these war memorial vandalisms hit the core of my being and chap my hide.

“It is every citizen’s solemn duty and moral obligation to honor those who have fallen in service to our country, not stomp on their memory. Their memorials are meant to move us to patriotic action, not perilous pilfering. Our patriotism and reciprocated service should be to preserve their memory, protect their honor and commemorate their service and sacrifice.

“As Abraham Lincoln said at Gettysburg in 1863, ‘it is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.'”

Why it Matters:  Do I really have to tell you why this matters?  Chuck Norris wrote it!  It therefore matters.

And, if Chuck Norris’ own mirror is scared to look at him, then the folks who are going around the country desecrating war memorials ought to think twice!

I mean, seriously – Chuck who recently judged a book by its cover – gives us a good reminder of the dangers that religious liberty presents.  That is, we sometimes think that persecution in this country is either physical or philosophical.  Norris reminds us that it is often both.  And, in recent cases, the arguments against displaying one’s religious belief – in particular, Christian belief – is sufficient grounds to merit threats, vandalism, and bombs.  Yes, bombs.

So, for those who have so vandalized our war memorials, think you can’t be found?  Always remember: Chuck Norris has already been to mars; that’s what there are no signs of life on that planet.
