The Leading Edge: Affordable Care Act, Yes; Obamacare, No

The Story: Watch: Jimmy Kimmel’s Hilarious ObamaCare Prank,” as reported by Michael Miller at the Independent Journal Review.

The Lead: “So, guess what happens when you send a camera crew out onto Hollywood Boulevard to ask a very simple question: “Which do you like better, the Affordable Care Act, or ObamaCare?” Hilarity ensues.

On Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel did just that. And, yes, hilarity ensued. Low-information voter after low-information voter confidently avowed that they would prefer coverage under the Affordable Care Act vs. that provided by ObamaCare.”

Why it Matters: We owe comics a very great deal of gratitude for doing what not the most serious preacher, nor politician could every do: make us see the error of our sheepish ways.

As I watch these answers to the intentionally wry questions, I cannot help but be reminded of Ephesians 5:6, “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.” How easily we are sometimes taken in by the “empty words” of politicians.  As followers of Christ, we are meant to be discerning people, weighing what is presented to us as a truth claim with the truth contained in the Gospel.

Have a good laugh at the expense of these unfortunate few who reflect in one area that which we, in all likelihood, would reflect in another.  Then, be on your guard to avoid the “empty words” others may throw at us to capture our allegiance.
