The Story:  “Rebuttals to Arguments for Same-Sex Marriage,” by Brandon Vogt at OSV.com.

The Lead: “Perhaps no issue is more nerve-wracking today than same-sex marriage. It’s a magnet for controversy, evoking strong reactions from those on either side of the debate. But beneath all the fiery passion and rhetoric, there are real arguments to evaluate. In this article, we’ll examine the 10 most common ones made in favor of same-sex marriage, many of which you’ve probably heard before. By pointing out the flaws, we’ll show how each argument ultimately comes up short. “

Why it matters:  Think the debate over same-sex marriage is over with the decision of the Proposition 8 decision by the Supreme Court earlier this summer?  Think again!

Activists in several states are gearing up to repeal state marriage amendments.  Other states, without an amendment, will meet hefty opposition in working to solidify the definition of marriage within their state laws.  And, then there is always the water cooler at work, the potluck at church, or the guy on the treadmill next to you at the gym.  The debate is ubiquitous because it is culturally momentous.  You may meet died-in-the-wool activists with slick and well thought out arguments or you might just catch someone regurgitating what they’ve heard Jon Steward say.

Either way, we need to be ready to give a thoughtful response, not merely to the testimony of marriage (though that, in and of itself, is a worthy task), but to give an answer for the hope that lies behind the picture of marriage itself.
